You know that feeling you get on a sunny day when suddenly the sun is swallowed by a dark cloud? Everything becomes colourless and unpleasantly cool.<\/p>

You may be thinking immediately of how your plans for the rest of the day are spoiled with the threat of wind and rain.<\/p>

Yet, all you experienced was a shadow<\/strong>.<\/p>

If only we could see our life on a graph. This graph would show the amount of time we spend fearful of something certain in contrast to the amount of time we spend in fear of what might be.<\/p>

For example, a large majority of my fears so far have come from a fear of failure. Failure is nearly never certain<\/strong>. But because I believe that the chances of my failure are high, I don\u2019t try. Fear holds me back. The fear of what might be<\/strong>.<\/p>

David never said that he was walking through the valley of death. It was the shadow<\/em> of death.<\/p>

Perhaps this implies that the reality of death was not too far away. For David, this was true much of his life. The amount of time he spent in combat, and against foes mightier than he, was significant.<\/p>

It would be fair, in most people\u2019s eyes, for David to have had a constant worry that death loomed nearby.<\/p>

However, David\u2019s many writings combat this idea emphatically. His focus was on the Lord<\/strong>. He knew that the Lord was with him and on his side.<\/p>

You and I can have the same certainty that David had. In fact, we can have greater certainty<\/strong> and declare with confidence, \u201cFor God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind.\u201d<\/em> 1 Timothy 1:7<\/p>

David did not have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He did not have the words of Jesus now available to us. All he had was faith in God\u2019s nature<\/strong>. And to David, that was enough to take him through a valley of shadows.<\/p>

\u201cSo do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.\u201d<\/em> Isaiah 41:10<\/p>
