This was met with objection again but the boy obeyed much quicker. He noticed the weeds from the week before that he had left. They had already grown significantly but in his pride and stubbornness, decided to leave them again.

By the time he had returned for the third week, the omitted weeds gave the boy a nasty shock. They had grown exponentially and were rooted deep. A small tug was not sufficient and the boy began to panic. He got to work with vigour but the weeds would not budge. He dug around one with a trowel, pulled hard but fell backwards holding the broken stem. There in the ground he could see the thick root and the boy ran crying to his father to confess his error.

Of course, the father had no trouble with the root but the story proved to be a great lesson on obedience and submission to God.

Like the weeds, unconfessed sin will grow. And it’s not so much the visible parts of that weed that are dangerous, it’s the damage that the roots are doing in our heart. The longer it’s left alone, the harder it is to deal with.

The same can be said for the parts of our lives that, although not directly sinful, we aren’t willing to let God have his way with. Maybe it's some company we keep, shows that we watch or habits that bind us. These kinds of things are easier for Satan to blind us to and therefore harder to give to the Lord.

My counsel to you is twofold:

Pray the words of Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me…” Invite God into your soul so that He can make you aware of where there is a lack of submission to Him. This must be willingly given over as the Lord cannot overrule our freewill. Don’t hold back. There is no weed that is too deeply set for our mighty God.

Make it a habit to analyze for weeds that will attempt to grow in your life. Stop them from taking root at all and pull them while they have no strength. These weeds will always begin with a thought and this is why we are urged, “...bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Satan is subtle and the only way to spot error is to see everything the way that God does. And the only way to see the way that God does is to be familiar with scripture. When it says to “meditate on His law day and night” in places like Psalm 1:2 and Joshua 1:8, it’s because in doing so we equip ourselves with a dangerous arsenal of weed-killer for our minds.

Jacob Shepherd

CEO & Co-Founder | Revival

:::::::::::::::::

Want to receive our weekly blog posts and be notified first about our new designs and sales?
