The Holy Spirit has revealed to me some amazing, beautiful, life-changing revelations with time but this one went straight being a contender for top of the list so get comfy!

In Matthew 27:45-46 we have this account, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Now, most Jews present for the crucifixion would have surely recognised the opening words of Psalm 22 - chapter of Scripture that we now hold in great esteem for its incredible prophetic content concerning the suffering of the Messiah, Jesus.

But there’s something just a little deeper here. Jesus was calling our attention to seemingly insignificant detail in this prophecy from thousands of years before his coming. He wanted us to unearth what’s called a ‘remez’, an interpretation of Scripture. A treasure under the surface.

In verse 6 of Psalm 22 are the words, “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.”

Now, we know that this was to be seen as being the perspective of Jesus Christ but was Jesus really calling Himself a worm?

Well, the word for worm in Hebrew is ‘rimmah’ but that’s not the word used in Psalm 22. It’s actually “towla”’ or “tola’ath”. This specific word is not only referring to a worm or maggot common to the Holy Land but also a potent, blood-red colour.

So, yes, Jesus was calling Himself a worm! But why?

The crimson worm’s life cycle is where we find the answer.

A female crimson worm lays eggs only once in her lifetime. To do so, she climbs up a tree, often a common Israeli Oak, and fastens her body to the tree in such a fashion that to remove her, you would have to tear her body.

Once fastened, she forms her hard crimson shell. This protects the eggs that she then lays under herself. When these eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the living mother’s body for three days until she finally dies.

In her final moments, the mother crimson worm excretes a blood-red dye that stains both the tree she is fastened to and her young who will now be this colour for the rest of their lives, thus identifiable as crimson worms.

Maybe you already knew of this ‘remez’ from Psalm 22 but this shook my world!

How can there be any doubt of the love of our God? How can there be any doubt to the fact that His Word is alive?

I would love to dive into how this same worm was used to dye the ram’s skins for the Tabernacle of the Lord and the Levite’s robes but perhaps that will need to be a story for another day!

Instead, let these words prompt you to meditate on how rich the words of Scripture are; how Jesus intended for us to be nourished by His living body which He, and not Romans or Jews, fastened to the cross, to be washed by His blood so that we are forever recognisably His children.

Jacob Shepherd

CEO & Co-Founder | Revival

:::::::::::::::::

Want to receive our weekly blog posts and be notified first about our new designs and sales?
