If not, I’ll summarise.

Barabbas was imprisoned for murder and insurrection against Rome. All four Gospels confirm this. He was in Roman custody during Christ’s trial and had been sentenced to death by crucifixion.

You can imagine this murderer’s surprise when he hears that the famous rabbi who the people love and tell stories of is to be executed in his place.

Jesus? The one who has power over devils? The one who has healed the sick and lame? The one who even loves lepers?

The truth is, I am Barabbas. His name literally means “son of the Father” of “son of the Master/Teacher”. Despite me being God’s creation, I deserved to die for the wrong I have done and will do. I was in the custody of the law until something miraculous happened: somebody took my place.

Jesus freed me too. Just like with Barabbas, Jesus took my place even though He had done nothing wrong. Not even close to wrong! Yet, He chose to take on all the judgement that I deserved so that I could walk free and truly be a “son of the Father”.

How is this fair? It’s not. It’s both the greatest travesty of the Universe and yet the greatest and most joyous of victories.

We are all Barabbas. We, according to the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:27-28, are all murderers, adulterers and thieves because we are judged, not by our actions, but by our thoughts. The standard for righteousness is so high that it is unattainable. And if we are not righteous, then we can never have relationship with God our father through he Holy Spirit, like Adam and Eve did in Eden.

This is why Christ had to come and die a sinless man, God made flesh - Emmanuel. Every one of us, the Barabbases of the world, can be made free men and women if we simply accept the forgiveness offered through the Cross of Calvary.

If you have already made this choice, hallelujah! If not, do not delay a minute more - do not continue to live as a prisoner of your sins, doomed to the judgement of the law. Accept forgiveness and be made free indeed! Call on the name of Jesus, let Him take your place like He did for Barabbas and begin your eternity with Him today.

Jacob Shepherd

CEO & Co-Founder | Revival

:::::::::::::::::

Want to receive our weekly blog posts and be notified first about our new designs and sales?
