You’ve heard it said that each day brings us closer to the return of Jesus. Well, now we’re a whole year closer!

“New year, new me,” is a phrase many of us are already tired of. The resolutions are stated, plans are made and hope is placed in them. But for the vast majority, it’s all meaningless.

Of course, Jesus is usually nowhere to be seen in the resolutions of the unsaved. For the professing believer, perhaps there is mention of the Saviour. However, this is where I must issue my warning.

Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope misplaced has destroyed countless lives.

Proverbs 13:12 tells us that, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick.” And as January 1st approaches every year, hope is placed in the plans and commitments of billions.

For the believer, our hope can be in nothing but Jesus Himself. Perhaps Jesus is a flavour of some of your resolutions and that may seem more righteous than most but this is still not good enough.

Jesus must be the ground zero for every hope you have.

If any of your plans are not conceived from knowing Jesus, the hope that you have in them will only bring you pain. David and Solomon understood this principle very well. For example, “For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from Him,” Psalm 62:5 and then a step further, “For thou art my hope, O Lord God,” Psalm 71:5. Hope is not just in God, God is our hope.

It’s not wrong to make plans. In fact, we should plan for our futures to a certain extent. One of my favourite verses from last year was Proverbs 16:3 which says, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” What wonderful reassurance! Yet, if you had no plan to commit to the Lord, there is nothing for Him to establish.

But making plans and achieving goals are not even close to our primary purpose of being here on Earth. No, it’s not being charitable. No, it’s not even telling people about Jesus. Our primary purpose is simply knowing Him.

When this truly becomes our highest priority and everything that we are living for, the desires that then manifest into plans have a righteous, safe hope because it is inspired of God. Simply put, “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart,” Psalm 37:4.

Look to Jesus. Like you never have before. Put your hope in nothing else but Him. Remind yourself that, while we see through a glass darkly for now, one day we will see our Lord face to face. We will embrace and He will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

When our focus is tuned in this way, everything falls into place before us where and when it needs to. That sounds like a good year ahead.

Jacob Shepherd

CEO & Co-Founder | Revival

:::::::::::::::::

Want to receive our weekly blog posts and be notified first about our new designs and sales?
