Jesus prays and five loaves and two fish are miraculously multiplied into enough food to feed more than five thousand people.

Now, if you’re like me, you’ve heard, seen and read versions and interpretations of this famous story hundreds of times since you first began Sunday School as a small child.

And, as often happens when we are overly familiar with scripture, it’s tempting to gloss over it as we read through our Bibles. However this week, reading these five small verses from Luke (for maybe the five thousand-th time!) God showed me a completely new perspective on this familiar scene.

Let’s go back to the verse at the start, Luke 9:16. This time, however, we’re going to slow down and ask ourselves, “Who fed the five thousand?” Jesus? Well, actually, no.

It is true that Jesus spoke the prayer which lead to the multiplication of the food. Being God, He is the provider of all good things. But it was the disciples who actually took the food out and fed the people.

Now, just put yourself in the disciples shoes for a moment. Imagine, Jesus hands you a portion of fish and bread, barely enough to feed yourself, and tells you to go towards one of the many groups of fifty strangers and feed them. You look at the hungry faces in front of you, then down at the food in your hands. It’s not enough. Then you look back at your master, Jesus. You know that He is enough. And you make the choice to step forward in faith.

That is the key. It was a choice they had to make to believe in Him. Without the faith of the disciples to take what God had given them, casting aside their own doubts and showing bold faith in front of complete strangers, this miracle would not have taken place.

You can see from the start that this was Jesus’ plan. In verse 13, when the disciples ask what should be done to feed the crowd, Jesus answers, “You give them something to eat.” He doesn’t say, “I will feed them,” or, “Tell them to come to me.” In fact, over and over again through His ministry, you can see the pattern of Jesus pushing people to step out in faith for the miraculous to take place. He wants his disciples to understand that, through Him, they can step forward with authority and confidence to perform miracles.

And this is the great challenge to us as Christians: to truly live as disciples of Jesus walking in a life of faith. God has great power to do many, many miraculous things but He wants to use us as His vessels to bring forth His great and marvellous plan through our acts of true faith.

Faith that can look down at our circumstances, knowing that on our own we are not enough, and yet step forward, staring the world and it’s judgement in the eyes, with the unshakeable confidence that He is enough. Proving with undeniable demonstration that Jesus is Lord.

Rosie Shepherd

Senior Designer & Co-Founder | Revival

:::::::::::::::::

Want to receive our weekly blog posts and be notified about our new designs and sales?
