It is a wonderful story about supernatural healing. We can look at this account in Luke 17:12-19.

“And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”

The lepers received healing when they obeyed Jesus and made off to show themselves to the priests in order to be certified as healed according to the Jewish law. They acted in faith and obedience to receive healing. This is incredible in itself.

But then something even deeper happens.

One leper, upon realising the miracle, turns around to thank and worship Jesus. To which Jesus responds, “...your faith has made you whole.”

This is what I want to emphasise to you. All ten lepers received supernatural healing for an incurable disease as soon as they began to obey Jesus’ instruction. So, why did Jesus conclude by saying that the Samaritan leper was now ‘whole’?

Because ‘healed’ and ‘whole’ are different words.

Physically, all ten lepers were healed. But because the Samaritan leper gave glory to God, worshipping Jesus, He had realised that Jesus was the Messiah - God in the flesh. Therefore, Jesus was saying that this grateful man had been made whole in his heart (or soul) and, most importantly, spiritually.

Whole, or sozo in the Greek, is translated as saved, delivered or salvation elsewhere in the New Testament.

Healing is a wonderful thing. And yes, Jesus still heals today. But physical healing is not where the wonderful, loving power of God stops.

It is God’s desire that we allow Him to heal us in spirit, soul and body.
